What to do in the area

Monte Serrasanta
One of the more popular areas
for the locals as well as visitors
is the Valsorda,
the hills and mountains above Gualdo Tadino.
If you want to drive, hike, bike, or picnic,
you'll find the Valsorda
a welcoming and refreshing pastime.
You can stop just about anywhere
to look at the incredible views
and take your own memorable photos,
or find an occasional picnic table

Leave your car in safety and find a hiking path
or just spread out a blanket on a meadow in the sunshine.
Whatever you do,
it's a trip to remember and record with your camera.

Frasassi Gorge
.
A good day trip on a rainy afternoon is to explore
the incredible plunging
Frasassi Gorge in Genga,
Le Marche,
just a short distance
from Porta San Donato
(40 km., 25 miles).
Take a
"Journey to the Center of the Earth" through the
Grotte di Frasassi,
one of Italy's largest and most famous complex of caves.
Some 13 km. of limestone caverns
have been explored so far,
and it is thought that they may run for up to 35 km.
One and a half kilometers are open to the general public.
Equipped with walkways and theatrical lighting,
it includes the awesome Grotta Grande del Vento,
Europe's largest single cavern,
so vast that Milan Cathedral would fit comfortably inside.
And there you'll find some of the most extravagantly fanciful
stalagmites and stalactites you are ever likely to see.
Even claustrophobics shouldn't find it too challenging!
.
The guided tour lasts for about an hour; dress up warmly as the temperature inside is a constant low 14° C. (58 ° F.) Be warned that it can get quite crowded in high summer.

.
After visiting the caves,
take the time to admire
the San Vittore alle Chiuse
in Genga, an abbey
from the year 1011.
Furlo Gorge
.
Drive out on the old
Via Flaminia
toward Fano,
and you will be treated to the stunning Furlo Gorge.
.
This is a place
for lovers
of Gothic scenery -
sheer naked
limestone cliffs
rise up
on either side
of the bright green waters of the Candigliano River,
leaving just enough room for the narrow road to pass.
